Sight Words (Fry Words)

Updated on January 22, 2022

In 1996, Dr. Edward B. Fry expanded on the Dolch Sight Word Lists to develop the 1000 Instant Words. These words are the most commonly used words in English reading, writing, and spelling. In expanding on the Dolch lists, Dr. Fry found that:

  • 25 words make up approximately 1/3 of all items published
  • 100 words comprise approximately 1/2 of all of the words found in publications
  • 300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material.

To ensure successful reading, it is critical that students know and can read these 300 sight words without a moments hesitation. The lists below are provided for you to practice at home.

Please chunk these words into groups of 5-10 and practice nightly. Encourage your child to find them in reading, on signs and in public, and to use them in daily speech.
